About Us
At GCHQ, we unlock the complex world of data and communications to keep the UK and its citizens safe, both in the real world and online. Working closely with our British Intelligence partners in MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from threats including serious organised crime, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. A role in GCHQ means you’ll have varied and fascinating work in a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.
The National Cyber Force (NCF) is a partnership between Defence and Intelligence. We operate in and through cyberspace to counter, disrupt, degrade and contest those who would do harm to the UK and our Allies, to keep the country safe and to protect and promote the UK’s interests at home and abroad.
The Role
GCHQ is a key partner organisation within the National Cyber Force (NCF). This is an exciting time to join our new NCF headquarters and play a key role in supporting its establishment. As a Senior Business Enabler, you’ll help develop new, strategic ways of working, build and develop stakeholder relationships and ultimately ensure the NCF has what it needs to operate smoothly.
You’ll be joining one of our business areas requiring support, staying there for a minimum of two years, allowing you to develop a deep understanding of what’s required and make tangible contributions. You’ll be the key point of contact for internal and cross-team communications and handle sensitive information with discretion. Importantly, you’ll be pivotal in establishing the success of our new NCF headquarters.
Depending on your role, you might be helping implement business strategies alongside other departments, liaising with various stakeholders, organising and co-ordinating team building and training events, or communicating key messages to colleagues through the appropriate channels. One of these roles could be an executive assistant, where you will play a crucial role in providing administrative support to senior staff, managing a variety of day-to-day tasks. This could include being responsible for maintaining and coordinating calendars, ensuring that meetings, travel arrangements, and correspondence are efficiently organised. You may also provide support for meetings by crafting agendas, gathering necessary documents, and taking minutes to document discussions. Some of these roles may include line management responsibilities.
In short, this is a role with real impact. Senior Business Enablers are central to our success, and you’ll enjoy diverse, influential work while gaining exposure to the inner workings of defence and intelligence. Please note, some national travel may be required, however this does not happen often.
About You
There’s no ‘type’ of person we recruit, and you don’t need a degree to apply. However, you will need Maths and English Language GCSEs at minimum Grade C/4, and demonstrable experience in a similar role. You’ll also be confident using the full suite of Microsoft Office tools.
With your experience you’ll demonstrate the ability to clearly articulate ideas and tailor messages to diverse audiences and at varying organisational levels, ensuring effective communication. You’ll be an active listener, able to understand stakeholder needs, foster collaboration, and build trust through consistent and professional interactions. In short, you’ll be effective in building strong relationships with key stakeholders. You should be open to different perspectives, capable of challenging ideas constructively, and adept at managing disagreements. You will possess strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data, break down complex issues, and think creatively to address underlying problems. Additionally, you must be highly organised, able to manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment, and curious enough to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
Importantly, you’ll be keen to bring your expertise to a uniquely exciting challenge. You’ll help build a supportive, welcoming and inclusive environment for colleagues at our new HQ and implement effective processes that support the business as well as the culture within it.
Training and Development
Our aim is to have an empowered, productive and professionally fulfilled workforce. We take your development seriously. You’ll be encouraged to take on training and you’ll receive plenty of support in furthering your career.
Upon joining, you’ll complete an induction to GCHQ as well as a tailored NCF induction, including a guide to the site. You’ll also have access to learning and development opportunities relevant to your role, including several in-house courses that we offer, dependent on your interests. Plus, you won’t be on your own - you’ll have the support of team members who’ll be keen to share advice, guidance and expertise from day one.
Rewards and Benefits
You’ll receive a starting salary of £44,044 plus other benefits including:
- 25 Days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years' service, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
- Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
- Interest-free season ticket loan (travel and parking)
- Excellent pension scheme
- Cycle to work scheme
- Facilities such as a gym, restaurant, and on-site coffee bars (at some locations)
- Paid parental and adoption leave.
Equal Opportunities
At GCHQ diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.

We’re Disability Confident
GCHQ is proud to have achieved Leader status within the DWP’s Disability Confident scheme. This is aimed at encouraging employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people. As a Disability Confident Leader, we aim to ensure that a fair and proportionate number of disabled applicants who best meet the essential minimum criteria for this position, will be offered an interview, if it is practical for us to do so. (This is known as Offer of an Interview.) To secure an interview for this role, the minimum criteria (in order of application process) are:
- Meet the minimum pass mark for the questions which explore your motivation to work for the organisation and this particular role
- Meet the minimum pass mark for two competency-based questions which will explore your communication skills and ability to make effective decisions
There is a wide range of extra support available throughout the recruitment process to enable you to do your best, see our website for information on reasonable adjustments we can offer.
What to Expect
Our recruitment process is fair, transparent, and based on merit. Here is a brief overview of each stage, in order:
- Application Sift
- Online Interview, including competency questions, role-based questions and a brief presentation
- If you’re successful, you’ll receive a Conditional Offer of Employment
Please note, you must successfully pass each stage of the process to progress to the next. Your application may take around 6 - 9 months to process including vetting, so we advise you continue any current employment until you have received your final job offer.
Before You Apply
To work at GCHQ, you need to be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality. You can read our full eligibility criteria here.
This role requires the highest security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV). It’s something everyone in the UK Intelligence Community undertakes. You can find out more about the vetting process here.
Please note we have a strict drugs policy, so once you start your application, you can’t take any recreational drugs and you’ll need to declare your previous drug usage at the relevant stage.
Before you apply, we advise you to consider setting up a separate email address for your contact with us, to ensure your personal and application correspondence remain separate. Try to avoid having identifying features in your email address, such as your first and/or surname and date of birth. This is good practise and will help you manage your application with us more discretely.
This role is based in Samlesbury, so you’ll need to live within a commutable distance. Please consider any financial implications and practicalities before submitting an application, as we do not offer relocation costs.
Please note, you should only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas, you should wait until you visit the UK to launch an application. Applying from outside the UK will impact on our ability to progress your application. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member.
Right to Withdraw Statement
Please be aware that we withhold the right to bring forward the closing date for this role from the original closing date once a certain number of applications have been received. Please be mindful of this and submit your application at your earliest convenience to avoid disappointment.
