Language Specialists

At GCHQ, we work together with our partners MI5 and MI6 to safeguard Britain’s people, interests, and businesses. To do that, we rely on Language Specialists who can read, write, speak, listen to, and understand a wide range of languages and dialects. Language Specialists also have an in-depth knowledge of a country’s history, culture, ideology and politics.

As a Language Specialist at GCHQ, you’ll work alongside language and mission teams, piecing together intelligence from a range of materials. While you’ll be translating and transcribing, the role is about more than just words. You’ll add context and identify key information, providing valuable insights that will help progress our operations and influence Government policy. You don’t need formal qualifications to join, but you’ll be a proficient user of your language. This proficiency could come from growing up in a multilingual household, training in the military or studying at university. You’ll also be someone who loves to solve problems, has a keen interest in communication technologies, and an eye for detail.
